ChatGPT study mode: how to learn with it instead of copying answers

In this guide

For students, parents and anyone teaching themselves a skill with ChatGPT.

By the end you will know how to switch on study mode, what it changes, the limits OpenAI states, five prompts to use inside it, and a simple weekly routine.

The details come from OpenAI's announcement of study mode and its help article.

The problem study mode solves

When ChatGPT gives a finished answer, it is easy to copy it and move on without understanding it. Study mode is built to slow that down. OpenAI describes it as a way to work through problems step by step rather than receive the answer outright.

Turn it on

  1. Open ChatGPT and sign in.
  2. Open the Tools menu.
  3. Choose Study and learn.

OpenAI launched study mode for logged-in Free, Plus, Pro and Team users, with Edu following.

What it does differently

OpenAI lists five features:

  • Interactive prompts that mix Socratic questions, hints and self-reflection.
  • Scaffolded responses that split the material into short sections.
  • Personalised support that can draw on your past chats, if memory is on.
  • Knowledge checks such as quizzes.
  • Flexibility: you can turn study mode on or off during a conversation.

Limits OpenAI states

  • Study mode runs on custom system instructions, so behaviour can be inconsistent and it can make mistakes.
  • The Study option is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects.
  • It still works with memory off, but answers may be less personalised.
  • It does not replace teachers or your course requirements.

Five prompts to use inside study mode

  1. Start a topic:
I want to learn [topic]. Ask me two questions first to find my level, then teach me step by step.
  1. Stay in control of the pace:
Explain only the next step, then ask me a question before you continue.
  1. Test yourself:
Give me 5 questions on what we just covered, one at a time, and tell me what I got wrong after each answer.
  1. Fix a weak spot:
I got [question] wrong. Do not give me the answer. Give me a hint, then let me try again.
  1. Close the session:
Summarise what I learned in 5 lines and list 3 things I should review tomorrow.

Replace the text in brackets with your topic.

A weekly routine

  • Day 1: learn one topic with prompt 1 and prompt 2. Stop when you can explain it in your own words.
  • Day 2: run prompt 3 on the same topic. Write down what you missed.
  • Day 3: use prompt 4 only on the weak spots.
  • Day 5: ask for the quiz again without notes.
  • Day 7: use prompt 5, then plan the next topic.

For parents

Parents with a linked teen account can turn study mode on by default from parental controls, according to OpenAI.

My honest take

Study mode helps most when you answer the questions honestly instead of asking it to skip ahead. If you start asking for the final answer straight away, you are back to copying.
