Gemini API free tier: what happens to your customers' data

In this guide

For sellers and builders who connect AI to their store, orders or WhatsApp with tools like n8n, and who are tempted by a free API key.

By the end you will know what Google's own pricing page says about the free tier, what that means for names, phone numbers and addresses, and the checklist to run before you connect any free AI API to real customer data.

The facts come from Google's Gemini Developer API pricing page and terms. Google changes models and rows often, so open the live page before you decide.

What the pricing page says

The pricing page has a row called "Used to improve our products". For the main models listed when I checked, the free tier shows Yes and the paid tier shows No. That includes Gemini 2.5 Pro, 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Flash-Lite, and the newer Flash and Flash-Lite models listed on the page. Some models are not available on the free tier at all, and a few cells show N/A.

In plain words: on the free tier, the content you send can be used to improve Google's products. On the paid tier, it is not.

Google's terms for unpaid use also say that human reviewers may read, annotate and process API input and output for quality purposes.

Why this matters for an order flow

A typical n8n flow sends the whole order to the model: customer name, phone number, address, product and price. If that flow uses a free key, you are sending customer data into a service that can use it to improve products and that humans may review.

Your customers gave you their details to receive a parcel, not to help train a model.

What never goes through a free key

  • Customer names.
  • Phone numbers.
  • Delivery addresses.
  • Order IDs that link to a person.
  • Anything a customer marked as private.

Three safe patterns

  1. Strip before you send. Replace personal fields with placeholders in n8n before the AI step, and put the real values back afterwards.
Order {{order_number_placeholder}}: product {{product}}, city {{city}}. Write a short delivery confirmation in Darija (Latin letters). Do not ask for personal details.
  1. Use the free tier only for non-customer work: product ideas, ad hooks, text rewriting with no personal data.
  2. Use a paid tier for anything that touches real customers. On the paid tier the same row shows No, according to the pricing page.

Checklist before you connect an AI API

  1. Open the pricing page and read the "Used to improve our products" row for your exact model.
  2. Check whether you are on the free or the paid tier for that key.
  3. List every field your flow sends. Remove the personal ones.
  4. Run a test with fake customers first.
  5. Write down which key is used for which flow, so a free key never ends up in an order flow by accident.
  6. Review it again when you change models or when Google updates the page.

What the contributor tier is

Google also lists an invite-only contributor tier that gives discounted prices in exchange for allowing data use. Do not use it with customer data.

My honest take

Free is a fine price for experiments and a bad price for customer data. The page tells you plainly which tier uses your content, so read the row for your model before you build the flow, not after.
